Description: Chateau
d'Yquem is often described as the greatest sweet wine in the
world. The wine has its own classification in
Sauternes of 1er Cru Classe Superieur and while much was
made of the sale of the estate to LVMH in 1999, the former owner and
director Alexandre de Lur-Saluce remains in charge. The
chateau adopts unbelievably strict methods when hand
selecting individual grapes affected with botrytis, producing
tiny yields which are fermented in 100% new French oak. The
result is an immensely powerful wine capable of decades of
cellaring.
The chateau described the 2003 vintage as extraordinary with
'total botrytis' which combined with the sacrifice of part
of the harvest, made for a 'benchmark' wine. A true
classic.
